How old were you when you started taking pictures?I have always been the girl who drives people crazy with a camera. Their have been many times when fun with my friends, meant taking a bunch of photos of ourselves getting ready to go out. School dances, parties, sleep overs, school trips, concerts, and cute new boyfriends always merited photographs! I believe I have more photos of my life and friends than anyone I know. Autumn of 1994 is the year I actually put a camera to use for "fine art" photography though. I studied photography at St. Edward's University by recommendation of my parents. Like many creative people, I was lost about what type of art to pursue. I contemplated majoring in fashion design, interior design, creative writing and other artistic studies. My Father shared his passion for photography with me and convinced me to try it. I fell in love with searching for objects to photograph and printing in a darkroom. I had dreams of traveling to Africa to photograph animals in the wild. I felt passionately about preserving the world and its beauty with my camera. I hoped people would see my photographs of animals and nature and would share my desire to save the world. Unfortunately, I discovered how unlikely it was for me to make a living from fine art and nature photography. So after years of working jobs that had nothing to do with who I am and my passions, I threw myself into the world of wedding photography.
What is your favorite thing about being a photographer?Capturing and making history of the candid moments!
How would you describe your overall style as a photographer? I try to be creative and produce new perspectives. I like to photograph the daily images of our lives that we take for granted. My style may change with each couple I photograph. Some clients prefer traditional and very formal photographs and others prefer carefree and fun photographs. I always love the couples who are willing to portray their personalities and get sassy for the camera! Those are the people who let my creative juices flow.
Words of advice for couples, when it comes to photography on their wedding day?Remember the importance of having someone who is good with a camera capture your wedding. There aren't that many tangible items you can keep from your cherished occasion. Photographs document a part of your family history for you and your beloved to enjoy for hundreds of years!
